fox 5's lauren demarco has more. >> i think we got to do everything we can to get the guns off our streets. >> reporter: d.c. mayor vincent gray among the 850 members of mayors against illegal guns. according to the group, 82% of gun owners including 74% of national rifle association members, support requiring background checks for anyone purchasing a gun. its 30 second super bowl ad airing in the d.c. market features claim of nra president wayne lapierre testifying before congress in 1999. >> we think it's reasonable to have manner to background checks for of sale at every gun show, no loopholes -- for every sale at every gun show, no loopholes. >> reporter: he says background checks for all gun originals as recommended by president obama -- owners as recommended by president obama would only lead to a gun registry. >> the criminals aren't going

to comply with it. they could care less. you've already seen you won't computerize the mental health records. we ought to quit calling it right now a universal check. the real title ought to be the check on law abiding people all over this country. >> how do we know? let's start the effort and then we'll see. >> reporter: mayors against illegal guns is calling for not only background checks but a ban on assault weapons. one area where mayor gray does agree with lapierre. >> we've historically had police officers in our schools and i see something nothing wrong with that. i think it's a good idea. >> reporter: mark kelly is also speak out. during a fox news sunday exclusive he said he and his wife, former congresswoman gabby giffords, are both gun owners, but -- >> this isn't about the second amendment anymore. this is about public safety. we had 20 1st graders die in their classrooms because we don't have sufficient gun

violence legislation in this country. another big story tonight, an american hero dead, his suspected killer in custody. authorities say former navy seal chris kyle known as the american sniper was gunned down at a rural texas shooting range allegedly by a u.s. marine. 25-year-old eddie ray rouse is now facing murder charges. he turned his weapon on kyle and his neighbor chad littlefield before using kyle's pickup truck as let get-away car. >> drove to midlothian where he went to his sister's home and told his sister and brother-in- law what had he just done. >> an automatic handgun was later recovered at rouse's home. he was a decorated corporal deployed to iraq in 2007 and haiti in 2010. he is currently on suicide watch in custody. day six of an ongoing hostage situation in midland,

alabama. investigators continue to work with accused captor jimmy lee dykes hiding out in an underground bunker with a 5- year-old boy with medical needs. he is wanted for killing the boy's bus driver and taking the boy hostage. dykes has been working with investigators getting the boy medicine, toys and food. >> we don't know why if we're ever faced with this as a community as a whole. the edge on d.c. now, police looking for the person who stabbed a man to his death inside his northwest apartment. a relative found howard venable jr. unresponsive in his home on fuller street saturday. neighbors say the 68-year-old lived in this building for over 15 years, first with his wife and recently taking care of his young granddaughter. neighbors are surprised by the recent events. >> he was a good guy, looked out for the kids, treat us

good. that was it. >> he was quoted recently in the apartment's newsletter about how happy he was living in the mozart apartments. there's now a $25,000 reward for information that helps catch his killer. friends and family helping out a son who lost everything in a fire. crowds gathered at u street tavern in northwest for a fundraiser to help jimmy gardner. his mother laura snyder gardner and 16-year-old sister marianne were both killed when a devastating fire swept through their falls church home january 23rd. gardner also lived at the home losing all his belongings in the fire as well. >> he didn't happen to be there that night. with the fire he's lost everything including his family and belongings. >> jimmy was unable to attend the fundraiser tonight in florida at a memorial service for his mother who once taught at the florida school for the deaf and blind in st. augustine. a former d.c. school superintendent has died.

66-year-old arlene ackerman passed away at her new mexico home saturday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. she was superintendent of the public schools from 1998 through 2000 and is credited with raising test scores and reducing administrative costs. the former chancellor of schools in the district michelle rhee is opening up about how she handled the firing of several teachers and principals in 2008. rhee said she did the right thing by making the cuts but should have done it differently. in 2008 she fired dozens of school employees, many of those principals fired on national tv. now she says she shouldn't have done that on national tv. in maryland prince george's county school officials wouldn't exclusive rights created by staff members and students proposing the work should be copyrighted. now that so many teachers use school ipads for lesson plans and class work. it's worried that will stifle

from new orleans to baltimore. tonight it's their big win over the san francisco 49ers. >> fox 5's audrey barnes is live in baltimore tonight where the fans are going wild. can you hear me? >> reporter: i knew this was going to be nearly impossible to do this, but let me step away from the action and tell you people have been celebrating like this since really the end of the 4th quarter when the ravens looked like they had a shoe-in. people have been on their feet cheering. at 1 point they even climbed the statue of frank robinson outside camden yards. this is quite a scene here in baltimore. we're right outside pickle's pub. let me let you listen to what some of the people had to say about the ravens' tremendous super bowl win. >> the best conventional win ever. ray lewis played with so much heart tonight. joe flacco came out there. >> i love this one. we earned it. we came a long way.

let's toss it over to gwen. >> hard to compete with. you see that poor dog probably doesn't know what is going on. we've got clouds and a little light snow moving in the area through the the course of tonight, but tomorrow another cold day and one more clipper system, very light in nature, a few flurries here and there. 35 degrees our high today at national, 33 dulles, 34 bwi thurgood marshall. a cold night tonight, doesn't seem that cold in baltimore with everybody outside. it's 32 degrees there now, 34 at d.c., 28 gaithersburg, 31 dulles, 28 martinsburg. the cold air will stick around another day, ridge of high pressure building in tomorrow, but we've got another system heading through. that's going to set us up for more passing snow flurries and light snow into the course of tomorrow afternoon and evening. some of the models want to bring it in late into monday night and some want it earlier. we'll have to watch it.

looks like also we could get maybe an inch or less, but there are some models that want to bring in a little more snow. we'll have to see how it all develops. to the west winter storm watch and winter storm warning in effect, pendleton, mineral counties in effect for that beginning monday night into tuesday morning. so a lot more accumulations over the mountains, 4 to 8 inches, and strong gusting winds. we have some wind chills. they'll improve tomorrow, 38 degrees, but the warm-up kicks in the later part of the week. back to you. that does it for us. fox 5 news is always on www.myfoxdc.com. >> keep it right here. sports xtra is two minutes away.

this is dylan right here, this is dylan, and this is his big brother hayden. dylan's only five, but he's already been through two surgeries for brain tumors. and he just went through his second round of chemo. and this is their mother, dawn, who runs this loving and happy home. she too struggled with tumors. but that doesn't slow her down. her love of family comes first. their dad, phil, works two jobs, repairing copiers, and on weekends delivering newspapers. but the bills keep piling up, and the heating bill gets pushed off. when you learn about their difficulties, it just breaks your heart. when we asked the biggest oil companies to help families in need, only citgo, the people of venezuela, and president hugo chavez responded.
